Editorial Policy

People make real financial decisions based on what they read here, so we hold our guides to clear standards.

Sources

We base guides on primary sources: IRS forms, instructions and publications; HealthCare.gov and CMS; the U.S. Department of Labor; FinCEN; state tax and insurance departments; and the text of laws and regulations. We name the main sources at the end of each guide.

Accuracy and dates

  • Every guide shows the date it was published and, when revised, the date it was last updated.
  • Dollar limits and thresholds that change annually are labelled with the year they apply to, or described in a way that stays true when they change.
  • Worked examples are simplified on purpose and say so.

Independence

Advertising pays for the site. Advertisers do not influence which topics we cover or what we say about them, and we do not accept payment for favorable coverage. Any affiliate relationships will be disclosed on the page where they appear.

Use of software tools

We may use software, including AI writing assistants, to help draft, edit or check content. A person reviews every guide before it is published and is responsible for its accuracy.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note significant corrections on the page. Report an error through our contact page.
