Self-Employment Tax Calculator

Enter your expected net profit (business income minus business expenses) to estimate your self-employment tax for the year. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How the calculation works

  1. Net earnings from self-employment = net profit × 92.35%. (Below $400 of net earnings, no SE tax is due.)
  2. Social Security part = 12.4% × net earnings, but only up to the wage base minus any W-2 Social Security wages.
  3. Medicare part = 2.9% × all net earnings. (The extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on high incomes is not included here.)
  4. Deductible half = 50% of SE tax, which lowers your income tax.
  5. Rough income tax = (profit − deductible half) × the rate you chose. This ignores the standard deduction, the QBI deduction and credits, so it is deliberately conservative.

The wage base field defaults to the 2025 figure ($176,100). Replace it with the current year's number from the Social Security Administration. Want the full picture? Read how quarterly estimated taxes work.
